Members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club held a bass tournament at Pine Creek Lake on Saturday, June 27. The day started off with cloudy skies, a light sprinkle and a moderate breeze and a temp of about 74 degrees. The breeze gave way to a strong wind later in the day and the sun warmed things up into the low nineties. . The lake was about 2.80 feet above normal. Seventeen of the twenty anglers that were entered in the tournament caught their limit of five bass.
Johnny Ivey won the event with a five fish limit that
weighed 13.87 pounds. Ellis Silvey
finished in second place with a stringer weight of 12.95 pounds. Ellis also caught the big bass of the
tournament. It weighed 3.73 pounds. Eric
Baskin came in third with a stringer weight of 12.69 pounds.
In other club news, many of you know that for over fifty
years, members of the Pushmataha County Sportsman Club have volunteered to help
out at the Saturday evening cookout at Homecoming. Members volunteered as servers for bar-b-que
at the football field many years ago.
This eventually was turned into a fish fry and members brought their
fish cookers and propane tanks to cook the catfish for the meal. This year was no exception. Members, once again, showed up ready to cook
the fish. However, when Chamber of Commerce president Jeffrey Lucas showed up
at 3:45 with the cooking oil and fish, he told members that the group that had volunteered
to help out was not going to be able to show up. Club members that were
present, along with spouses and adult daughters, immediately volunteered to
help out. Fish fillets needed to be cut
into smaller pieces, those pieces needed to be breaded, fish and hush puppies
needed to be cooked. Others began
getting things ready to serve the beans and coleslaw. Cups needed to be filled with ice to serve
tea and water. The meal was supposed to
start at 5:00. We were a little late
getting things ready, but without the help of all those that volunteered, the
meal would not have happened at all. I am honored to be part of a group that is
always willing to help out our community, at a moment’s notice. I appreciate the members, spouses and adult
daughters that helped out, even though they didn’t have to.
The club’s next bass tournament will be held on Saturday,
July 11, at Hugo Lake. Fishing times
will be voted on at the club’s monthly meeting that will be held on Thursday,
July 9. Meetings are held at the
Wildlife Heritage Center and begin at 7:30 p.m.
